Scholars will become acquainted with the works of 19th century  French artist Georges Seurat for this Art Masters lesson. Seurat had an eye of a scientist and a spirit of a Renaissance master. Through his studies of how the eye sees color, Seurat developed his own color theories and created a unique style of painting known as Pointillism. Students will learn how to divide colors into warm and cool families and use sandpaper and crayons to create their own colorful, dotted masterpieces.

The works of French Impressionist Edgar Degas are the focus of this  Art Masters  Academy lesson. Degas was a master of showing movement in his paintings, prints, and sculptures. Scholars will learn about his drawing techniques, including his use of a grid to create a balanced composition. The art activity puts the ‘right brain drawing’ theory into practice as they create their own line drawing highlighted with colorful chalk pastels.

Art Masters scholars will be introduced to the vivid, imaginative art of Joan Mirò, the famous 20th century Spanish painter.  Miró was inspired by the landscapes of his youth, as well as the colorful decorations found in Catalan folk art. He produced not only paintings but prints, ceramics, and sculptures, too. For the art activity, students will focus on his abstract, surrealistic works to create their own imaginative world based on line, shape, and color.

The Industrial Revolution. changed our landscape forever and Sheeler recorded those changes with his photographs, sketches, paintings, and lithographs. Students will use paper templates to create their own industrial landscapes with the same precise techniques Sheeler used. To enhance the art activity, special plastic crayons will be used for a new media experience.
